Carl,
You're right about the .config. If I recall, "make mrproper" also
clears dependency files (.deps ???). I have memories of being unable to
build after unpacking kernel .tgz files because they contained files
from the tarball creator's last build. It's been a couple of years, so
the actual details are lost in the mist of time.
