In theory you can configure wireless settings in /etc/network/interfaces.
In reality I have never gotten this to work. I ended up creating my own
script to set them at boot time on both the debian systems I set up.

aptitude is pretty good, though it takes some careful study of the help
information to really get the hang of its keyboard commands. It's
ncurses-based.
kpackage isn't bad, either, though it doesn't have all the sophisticated
search options aptitude does.
