Slimline harddrives are 1/3 height hard drives, usually used in
restricted-space cases such as slim profile cases and 1U server chassis.
They are still a 3.5 inch standard drive with the standard adapters. They
are also usually much more expensive than a standard drive of the same
capacity. It is just one more way to be as proprietary as possible. I have
heard some complaints about life and noise on these slim-line drives, but
cannot confirm whether it is actually an issue.

On the other hand, if you are talking about slimline Optical drives, they
are usually just laptop drives.
